In other words, little old Beaufort is not the only place around here that is on the verge of being destroyed by rampant, insensitive development. Fortunately, unlike the Town of Hilton Head, the City of Beaufort has a special Historic District Review Board that deals with projects in the Historic District. The problem here in Beaufort is not that we fail to have a protective ordinance, it’s that our so-called “City Fathers” have failed to enforce the ordinance.
The citizens are being awakened to the threats being posed to this unique place where we live, Beautiful Beaufort By The Sea. Efforts are afoot to change the direction away from opening the floodgates to development–such as converting downtown into a Convention Center filled with national-chain retail stores–into enforcing the existing City Code, which is supposed to protect us from such barbarities. Already a pre-emptive lawsuit has been filed against the City and the developer of the proposed Convention Center. Energetic citizens have also formed an alliance to muster the entire community to protect and enhance what is here.
If downtown Beaufort is allowed to go the way of Fort Lauderdale, St. Augustine, Savannah, Charleston, and Wilmington NC, it will only be because we do not have the willpower to resist this onslaught.
