County council rejects school board tax increase
At its regularly scheduled board meeting on Monday, June 28, Beaufort County Council rejected in a close split vote Beaufort County Board of Education’s plans to increase school taxes two percent. The school board wanted to fund with taxes a $2.3 million spending increase included in its $175 million budget for fiscal year 2010-2011, which begins July 1. The Beaufort County School District made public its upcoming $175 million FY 2010-2011 budget on its web site Friday, May 7, following revelation by The Beaufort Tribune that the district had failed to present the budget at two public hearings on the budget it held earlier this week on Hilton Head Island and in Beaufort. The Beaufort Tribune also revealed that the school board had adopted the budget even before holding these two public “hearings”. School board “hearing” on “proposed budget” failed to show budget and was not a hearing
On Thursday evening, May 6, the Beaufort County Board of Education held the second of its “public hearings” on its “proposed” FY 2010-1011 Beaufort County School District budget. The meeting was held at Robert Smalls Middle School in a room that the citizens had trouble finding due to absence of signage at the school’s front door directing the public to the meeting. No budget document was presented at the meeting. The chairman admitted in answer to a question that the school board had already passed the budget, meaning that this was not a proposed budget but an adopted budget as far as the school board is concerned and was not a hearing but a window dressing.
