Beaufort city council is facing an organized, open revolt by downtown business owners against paid on-street parking in the historic downtown business district. As of this morning, Wednesday, December 15, 97 downtown merchants and property owners have signed a petition, presented to city council last night, calling on council “to allow free, three hour customer parking along the streets including Bay Street, Scott Street, West Street and Port Republic Street in the downtown core business area.” [ read article ... ]

The Town of Hilton Head Island announced on Friday, December 3, that the Town last week successfully refinanced $13.74 million of Storm Water Utility Debt originally issued in 2002; resulting in a savings over the remaining 16 year life of the bonds of $2.87 million. With all precincts reporting, Henderson received 28,056 votes (62.33%) to Logan’s 16,855 (37.45%). Henderson won a majority in almost every precinct as shown in green on the map above. At its regularly scheduled board meeting on Monday, June 28, Beaufort County Council rejected in a close split vote Beaufort County Board of Education’s plans to increase school taxes two percent. The school board wanted to fund with taxes a $2.3 million spending increase included in its $175 million budget for fiscal year 2010-2011, which begins July 1. According to the Beaufort County 2009 Comprehensive Financial Report, the top five largest employers in Beaufort county are all in the public-sector: Beaufort County School District (3,400 employees), Beaufort Memorial Hospital (1,750), Beaufort County (1,164), Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island – Civilian Personnel (882), and Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort – Civilian Personnel (700). North Charleston site consists of Boeing Charleston and Global Aeronautica. These facilities perform fabrication, assembly, and integration of 787 fuselage sections.
Boeing announced Thursday that it has chosen its North Charleston facility, located about 70 miles from Beaufort, as the location for a second final assembly site for the 787 Dreamliner program. Boeing evaluated criteria that were designed to find the final assembly location within the company that would best support the 787 business plan as the program increases production rates. In addition to serving as a location for final assembly of 787 Dreamliners, the facility also will have the capability to support the testing and delivery of the airplanes. [ read article ... ]

Beaufort city council members met in special session yesterday for the sole purpose of considering on first reading an ordinance to set the tax levy for the city’s fiscal year 2010 operating budget, according to the notice for the meeting. Instead, the council members were presented with a resolution involving a millage increase for the capital budget. Council voted unanimously to increase the millage for the capital budget, resulting in a combined millage for the two budgets of 60.62 mils, which will result in a property tax increase of 14.83%.
