Lowcountry population grows 18%
Population in the South Carolina Lowcountry grew 18% between 2000 and 2009, according to estimates just released by the U.S. Census. The area is composed of Beaufort, Colleton, Hampton and Jasper counties. Almost all of the growth occurred in Beaufort County, which increased 27% from 122,077 to 155,215. [ read article ... ]

County council rejects school board tax increase
At its regularly scheduled board meeting on Monday, June 28, Beaufort County Council rejected in a close split vote Beaufort County Board of Education’s plans to increase school taxes two percent. The school board wanted to fund with taxes a $2.3 million spending increase included in its $175 million budget for fiscal year 2010-2011, which begins July 1.
