Spate of armed robberies and assaults continues on St. Helena Island
Robberies & assaults continue on island
Here is the list of armed robberies and assaults on St. Helena Island in the past two weeks as reported in The Beaufort Tribune:
June 14, five masked men hijack a truck on Lands End Road
June 18, two men attempt to hijack a bus near a migrant labor camp
June 22, a man and a woman rob a worker at a migrant labor camp off Seaside Road
June 27, five men tie up two men and three women in a house near the migrant labor camp off Seaside Road
June 27, four men rob a man near a convenience store on Sea Island Parkway
In each incident the report from the sheriff’s department states that the victim or victims did not know the perpetrators and were unable to describe them to investigators with any degree of specificity.
All of the incidents have occurred during the period of peak activity in the tomato harvesting season on the island. During this time the island is full of migrant laborers who follow the tomato harvest up the coast from Florida to Virginia and New Jersey to work in the fields and packing houses.
Reports of friction between islanders and the migrant workers continue to suggest that the robberies and assaults are a game of tit for tat between members of these two diverse groups of people. Law enforcement personnel have so far been unable to identify or arrest anyone responsible for the incidents.
