Man robbed at store on St. Helena Island
Just before 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, sheriff’s deputies arrived at the area of the Island Plaza convenience store, 862 Sea Island Parkway, St. Helena Island, in response to a reported armed robbery that occurred approximately 30 minutes earlier.
Upon arrival, the deputies met with a 23-year old man who said he had just been assaulted and robbed by four persons unknown to him.
The victim said that at approximately 6:45 p.m., he was getting out of his vehicle at Island Plaza when he was approached by several Hispanic men. The men told the victim they were police officers and were going to turn him into the immigration authorities.
One perpetrator put a knife to the victim’s throat and another pointed a handgun, which he put to the victim’s side.
When the victim attempted to struggle, he was struck in the face with the handgun. The victim was then forced into a nearby green minivan, where he was tied up and robbed of his wallet, cash and cell phone.
After being robbed, the victim was released, at which time he got into his vehicle, fled the area, and contacted the sheriff’s office.
The victim was transported to Beaufort Memorial Hospital, where he was treated for a laceration to his face and released.
The victim was unable to provide further description of his attackers.
The sheriff’s office is asking anyone with any information to please contact either Investigator Cpl. J. Fraser at 843-470-3213 or the Beaufort County dispatch center at 843-470-3267.
