Witnesses chase fleeing robbers, smash their car window

Robbers attack at St. Helena Island labor camp, flee in red SUV

The Beaufort County sheriff’s office is investigating an armed robbery that occurred at a St. Helena Island migrant labor camp.

Just after midnight on Monday morning, sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the migrant labor camp in the area of Butler Court off Seaside Road on St. Helena Island to investigate an armed robbery that had reportedly occurred an hour before.

Upon arrival, the deputies met with the male victim who said he had just been robbed at gunpoint by two unknown subjects.

The victim said he was taking some garbage to the dumpster when he was approached by a black male and a black female. The male suspect, who was armed with a handgun, demanded the victim’s wallet.

The victim complied, handing over his wallet containing an undisclosed amount of cash. Both suspects then fled the area in a red SUV.

Witnesses attempted to chase down the fleeing vehicle, throwing rocks at the vehicle as it exited the compound. The rear window of the vehicle was smashed, but the suspects were not stopped. The victim was unharmed during the attack.

Based on statements made by witnesses, investigators believe there may be additional, unreported instances of similar armed robberies recently occurring at the camp, which is the residence of seasonal migrant laborers working in the tomato fields on the island.

The Sheriff’s office is asking anyone with any information, and anyone who may have been a victim of such an unreported incident, to please contact either Investigator Sgt. C. Wilson at 843-470-3213 or the Beaufort county dispatch center at 843-524-2777.
