Sheriff’s office investigating attempted carjacking on St. Helena Island yesterday

Two men attempt to hijack a bus

On Tuesday we reported a carjacking on St. Helena Island that involved a truck. In that incident, five perpetrators hijacked the vehicle and drove off with it. This time the attempt involved a bus, but the perpetrators were not so successful.

At approximately 5:30 p.m. yesterday, Beaufort County sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the area of the migrant camp located at 95 Davis Green Road in reference to a reported attempted carjacking occurring moments before, according to a news release today. Upon arrival, deputies met with a 56-year old male victim who stated that two unknown armed subjects had just attempted to stop him.

The victim said he was driving the bus that takes migrant workers in the tomato fields to and from the camp and the farm. As he approached the area of Capers Island Road and David Green Road, he noticed two black males emerge from the woods line to the left of the roadway.

One of the men appeared to be armed with a rifle. As the bus approached, both suspects ran out in the roadway yelling for the driver to stop.

The victim refused, continuing on to the migrant camp where he called 911.

Both suspects were last seen running back into the woods as the bus passed by.

The suspects were described as follows: two black males between the ages of 17 and 25. Both were described as being between six feet and six feet three inches in height, weighing approximately 160 pounds. One was wearing a black shirt and blue-jean shorts and had short dreadlocks. The other was wearing a white shirt and jeans.

The sheriff’s office is asking anyone with any information to please contact either Investigator Cpl. J. Fraser at 843-470-3267 or the Beaufort County dispatch center at 843-524-2777.
