City worker assaults Bay Street resident, former state representative, at 4:30 am

A street cleaner employed by or under contract to the City of Beaufort cursed and assaulted Bay Street resident Wallace Scarborough at approximately 4:30 a.m. this morning, Tuesday, April 29, according to Scarborough. “He dropped his leaf blower, called me an obscene name and punched me in the face,” Scarborough reported to the police.

“My wife and I complained to the city at least twice recently about the noise without any relief. The city is violating its own noise ordinance by allowing those street cleaners to wake everybody up at 4:30 a.m. with screeching machines. I went outside this morning to get the name of the man because he uses his leaf blower at 4:30 a.m. under my bedroom window and the noise is terrible.”

Instead of identifying himself so Scarborough could report his name to city hall, the man dropped his leaf blower, cursed Scarborough and punched him in the face, Scarborough said.

Scarborough, age 54, served eight years in the South Carolina legislature as a state representative from James Island/Folly Beach before moving to Beaufort about five years ago. His father and his grandfather also served lengthy periods as state representative and state senator. Scarborough is married to Catherine Ceips, a former state representative and state senator from Beaufort.
