Rash of muggings and a robbery in Bay Street commercial area of downtown Beaufort
Responding to an inquiry today, August 17, by The Beaufort Tribune, Chief Matthew Clancy of the Beaufort Police Department has disclosed that three nighttime muggings and a robbery have recently taken place in the Bay Street commercial area of downtown Beaufort. All four of these reported crimes have occurred in the 800 and 900 blocks of Bay Street, location of downtown bars and restaurants, the downtown marina, and the downtown waterfront park.
On August 13 at approximately 2:00 a.m. an officer went to the hospital and met with a 39 year old male who reported that he had been assaulted. He stated that he was approached at a Bay Street establishment (he would not disclose the name) by three men and a woman. One of the men asked the victim if he “had a problem” with them and then the group began to physically assault him. He described the assailant as three white males and a white female in their 30s. The victim did not want to follow up on the case.
A 24 year old victim reported that on August 11 at approximately 10:30 p.m. he was walking in the alley near 920 Bay St. when he was struck in the back of the head and lost consciousness. When he awoke his car keys, $300 cash and a cell phone were gone. The victim stated that he got a ride home from a friend and at some point later had dental surgery and discovered his jaw was broken. The victim described his assailant as a black male approximately 5’10” tall and approximately 185 lbs. This incident was not reported to police until August 16.
On August 9 at approximately 8:50 p.m. an officer responded to a report of a robbery in the parking lot near 802 Bay Street. The officer was unable to locate anyone at the scene and got the phone number from dispatch of the person who had called. The complainant told the officer over the phone that his friend had been robbed earlier but refused to give his friend’s name or location. On August 12th the actual victim (19 year old man) came forward and reported that he was walking to his car with $20 in his hand. He was approached by a black male who asked him for a cigarette. He refused and then the subject asked him for a ride which was also refused. The subject then asked him if he wanted to buy drugs and when he refused that request the subject told him he had a gun and demanded the $20 which he turned over. It is not known why the victim waited to contact police.
On August 9 an officer met with a 27 year old male complainant at the hospital. He reported that at approximately 2:00 a.m. he was walking in the alley near 926 Bay Street when he was struck in the head from behind. He turned around and was struck again in the face with what he believed to be brass knuckles. His assailant is described as a thin young black male wearing a black shirt and dread lock style hair. The assailant and two other black males fled on foot after the victim was struck the second time. The victim drove himself to the hospital and police were contacted.
According to Chief Clancy these cases are under investigation and no arrests have been made.

Why can’t the police use a under cover officer for the robbers and catch them
