School District names five finalists for District Teacher of the Year

    School District names five finalists for District Teacher of the Year

    At a luncheon held Tuesday, August 10, five finalists were named for the Beaufort County School District Teacher of the Year, according to a School District press release.

    The five finalists are Dr. Denise Ondishko from Hilton Head Island Early Childhood Center, Kathy Ingram from Lady’s Island Middle School, Susan Prekop from Mossy Oaks Elementary School, Karen Perdue from Hilton Head Island IB Elementary School, and Tennille Scheriff from Hilton Head Island School for the Creative Arts. These teachers exemplify a commitment and dedication to educating students.

    Dr. Denise Ondishko has been teaching for the past twenty-one years and at Hilton Head Island Early Childhood Center since 2007. Dr. Ondishko completed her Bachelor’s Degree from Carnegie-Mellon University, a Master’s Degree from Eastman School of Music and her Ph.D. from Eastman University. Dr. Ondishko teaches music and believes that what makes her an outstanding teacher is that she strives to become the master teacher who lives in her mind and heart.

    Kathy Ingram has been teaching for the past twenty-five years and twenty-four of those years in Beaufort County School District at Lady’s Island Middle School. Ms. Ingram earned her Bachelor of Science Degree from Indiana University and her Master’s Degree from Lesley University. Ms. Ingram teaches dance at Lady’s Island Middle School and believes that all children need positive adult role models to lead and show them the path to be successful adults and citizens.

    Susan Prekop has been teaching for the past nineteen years, four of those years at Missy Oaks Elementary School. Ms. Prekop earned a Bachelor’s Degree from Ursuline College, a Masters Degree from the University of SC and an additional Masters Degree from Lesley University. Ms. Prekop teaches first grade and believes learning is having an open mind to engage with, to investigate and interact with the environment to develop an understanding of the world around us.

    Karen Perdue has been teaching for the past twelve years with eight of those years at Hilton Head Island IB Elementary School. Ms. Perdue earned a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of SC and a Master’s Degree from Converse College. Ms. Perdue teaches third, fourth and fifth grade gifted and talented in reading and math and believes that her role is not only to teach children knowledge and skills, but also build a foundation for them to take away life lessons that will improve their future.

    Tennille Scheriff has been teaching for the past twelve years and has been teaching in Beaufort County School District since 2002, for the past year at Hilton Head Island School for the Creative Arts. Ms. Scheriff a Bachelor of Arts Degree from the university of Iowa, a Master’s Degree from Coe College and is pursuing a Doctorate of Education Degree from Liberty University. Ms. Sheriff teaches fourth grade and believes he passion for teaching includes developing every student to their potential and ensuring successful experiences.

    School level teachers of the year are selected in April of every year. A committee reviews all of the candidates and five are selected as finalists for the District Teacher of the Year. In the fall, the district holds a “Celebration for Teachers” breakfast to honor all the teachers of the year and the District Teacher of the Year is announced.
