Hit and run near HHI bridges, suspect being sought

The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office is investigating an accident involving a vehicle and a bicycle that occurred just before 10:00 a.m. Friday morning, July 16.

At approximately 9:45 a.m., Sheriff’s deputies responded to the area of the Hilton Head Island bridges in reference to reports of a traffic accident involving a motorist and a person on a bicycle. After arriving, deputies met with witnesses who said that a woman driving a white minivan had struck a man on a bicycle and then fled the scene.

According to witness accounts, the victim, a 58-year-old man, was riding his bicycle on US 278 eastbound on the Bluffton side of the Hilton Head Island bridges when he was struck by an older model white Honda minivan that was also traveling east.

The driver of the suspect vehicle, described as a white female, possibly Hispanic, with long dark hair and blue or turquoise clothing, pulled over as did a motorist who witnessed the accident. The witness and the suspect got out of their vehicles to check on the victim, however, the suspect immediately ran back to her vehicle and fled the scene.

The witness contacted 911 as the suspect fled, and the suspect was last seen continuing eastbound on US 278. The victim was transported to Hilton Head Medical Center for treatment. His condition remains undisclosed, however, his injuries are not initially believed to be life-threatening.

The only additional information available regarding the description of the suspect vehicle was that it was missing the right side view mirror.

The Sheriff’s Office is asking anyone with information to contact the Beaufort County Dispatch Center at 843-524-2777.
