Federal funds awarded for public transportation in northern Beaufort County
US Senator Lindsey Graham (R), SC, notified Beaufort County leaders this week that the Federal Transit Administration will fund a $3.1 million request for public transportation in the northern part of the County.
The federal grant application was submitted through SC DOT which will disburse the funds and was prepared by a team from the County, Parris Island Marine Corps Recruit Depot, the Marine Corps Air Station, local municipalities and Lowcountry Council of Governments. Thirty letters of support from business, civic and higher education leaders were included in the application package.
The application outlined the need for transit service that would link much of northern Beaufort County to the region’s major employers, shopping areas and services. It also asked for funds to construct the first 6.7 mile phase of a multi-use trail along the old Port Royal to Yemassee Railroad and for connectivity from the bus routes and multi-use trail and other pathways to major destination points in the County. This will mean renovation, re-configuration and new construction of sidewalks, bike paths and trails.
Beaufort County Councilman Gerald Dawson said the announcement means big benefits for citizens of northern Beaufort County. “The need for transportation options in northern Beaufort County is clear. This will impact our local economy and help our citizens save money on automobile and gasoline costs. It’s better for our precious local environment and will reduce traffic congestion. It will increase user mobility for the disabled and for citizens in remote areas. It will also help create jobs. Congratulations to all our project partners here in Beaufort County. Your good work will directly affect the quality of life here for generations to come.”
Three-million dollars from the Beaufort/Jasper Water and Sewer Authority was used to help match the grant monies.
