B.J. Scott Choir sings praise, brings joy
Huspah Baptist Church of Gardens Corner is the home of the B.J., Scott Choir. The choir was organized in 1989 by Sister Cathy Morgan and named for the late Rev. Benjamin J. Scott, who was the church’s pastor for 35 years. The choir ministers to audiences carrying song of praise, worship and gospel music. The small community, nestled in the beautiful South Carolina low country near Beaufort, is big on gospel music as most Southern communities are. Whether it is a time tested hymn such as “Amazing Grace” or an old spiritual, the B.J. Scott Choir sings to the glory of God and thanks God for all their achievements.
For the past seventeen years the choir has sung at the Spring Tour of Homes sponsored by St. Helena Episcopal Church in Beaufort. Thousands have been serenaded as they have toured beautiful historic sites and plantations in the low country. The choir has traveled to New York City on numerous occasions, Florida, Georgia and throughout South Carolina carrying their message in songs. In 1999 the B. J. Scott Choir sung at the Mckissick Museum’s Art Symposium, in Columbia, South Carolina, at the special request of church member and world-renowned artist Jonathan Green. The choir sings regularly at functions sponsored by Palmetto Bluff in Bluffton to include the wedding ceremony of “Magic” Johnson’s son Andre.
Every year the choir gets more and more requests to sing at various functions such as weddings, birthday celebrations and baby christenings. Also, every year the choir sponsors a Gospel Concert during the First Sunday in July and each year the numbers of eager listeners increase. In talking with guests after hearing the choir minister you will hear comments such as “wonderful”, “your songs really touched me” or “the most beautiful music”. Members of the B.J. Scott Choir feel that God has anointed them with a special gift to carry His word and minister in its unique style.
With every passing year the choir’s membership has increased, now numbering 40 plus members. Brother Spencer Singleton, the choir’s musician for the past 19 years, does most of the musical arrangements for the choir; but he graciously accepts suggestions and maintains that collaboration with the members only enhances the musical pieces. His humorous personality tends to lighten the atmosphere during rehearsals, as well as serves as a cohesive bond between him and the choir members.
Sister Brenda Myers, the choir’s president and one of the lead soloists has been an inspiration to many choir members and many others that have heard her testimony. She has survived two tragic automobile accidents which have left her physically challenged; but more determined than ever to carry the message of Jesus Christ to anyone willing to listen. The one prayer of Sister Myers, as well as many choir members, is that the Lord will allow them to touch someone’s heart and possibly lead that person to Christ through their ministry. For that very reason, no invitation or engagement is looked upon as too small or declined unless absolutely necessary. To quote a popular gospel song, “To GOD be the glory for He has done great things”; this is certainly evident to anyone who comes in contact with the B.J. Scott Choir as they continue along life’s journey in song.
