Port Royal drug man sentenced to 27 years
A 37-year-old Port Royal man was sentenced to 27 years in prison Wednesday, May 26, for dealing drugs out of a Burton home in 2007, according to a report from the Fourteenth Circuit Solicitor’s Office.
A jury found Turuk R. Saunders guilty at the conclusion of a two-day trial prosecuted by deputy solicitor Angela McCall-Tanner, head of the Career Criminal Prosecution Team.
The home Saunders rented was under surveillance by the Beaufort-Jasper Drug Task Force in February 2007 when investigators obtained enough evidence of drug distribution for a search warrant. Inside the home, officers found 24 ounces of marijuana, 19 grams of crack-cocaine, 66 ecstasy tablets, 5.5 grams of powder cocaine, a loaded shotgun, loaded handgun and approximately $1,700 in cash.
Saunders, who has seven prior drug distribution convictions in South Carolina and Georgia dating back to 1993 according to the report, was convicted on the following charges: trafficking crack-cocaine, possession with intent to distribute cocaine, possession with intent to distribute marijuana and possession with intent to distribute ecstasy.
Three other individuals in the home at the time have already been found guilty for various charges. Most recently, Turuk Saunders’ younger brother, 22-year-old Akeem Saunders of Burton, was sentenced to three years on Monday for trafficking crack-cocaine, the report said.

Glad to see this. This fellow had seven prior drug distribution convictions, before this arrest in 2007. Wish they could get more of these repeat offenders off the streets.
