Three people trying to run against Joy Logan for county treasurer

Three trying to run against Joy Logan

Three people are scurrying about gathering petition signatures to have their names names placed on the upcoming election ballot to run against Joy Logan, the incumbent Beaufort County treasurer, according to news reports. These potential candidates are:

    • Mack Cook, City of Beaufort comptroller and director of finance. He has resided in the Beaufort area about four years, moving here from Anderson SC. He has held his City job for about two years after being controller at Tri Command Military Housing.
    • Doug Henderson, 65, a retired banker and former Beaufort County employee in the assessor’s office.
    • Jimmy Mackey, 61, Department of the Navy procurement technician. He has served three terms on Beaufort’s Tax and Equalization Board.

They are trying to get their names on the ballot to run against the incumbent:

    • Joy Logan, who has held the job of county treasurer for 20 years. Her past experience includes comptroller of Beaufort Federal Credit Union; operations officer of Carolina First Bank; corporate treasurer of First Federal Savings & Loan of Beaufort; and corporate treasurer of Palmetto Federal Savings & Loan.

The deadline for candidates through the normal process of paying a registration fee has passed with Logan being the only person to qualify. Potential candidates through petition such as the three currently announced must gather the signatures of at least 5% of the registered voters, which is about 5,000 signatures. The exact number of signatures required will not be known until the voter registration deadline passes on July 5. The deadline for gathering the signatures is July 15.

    1. Christine says:

      Oh please!

Help people save their land? She guided them on how to keep their property by getting the taxes paid. That’s her job!

First office to make online payments available.. Thank goodness! Otherwise NO payments would get posted correctly.

Payment collection rate WAS exemplary, however, those days have been long gone. There is a massive amount of money missing from this years delinquent tax sale. Where is it?

There are few people that have met her because she is never in the office!

Her job is not to be kind and caring. Her job is to run the Treasurer’s Office for Beaufort County.

As a taxpayer, I want someone who does the job properly and EARNS that over $80,000 paycheck. It isn’t Joy.

    2. Reality says:

Joy Logan should resign effective immediately. She rehired a known thief. This action allowed the thief to steal at least $200,000. This is no small sum. Whatever happened to “The Buck Stops Here”? She is ultimately responsible and she should have the decency to comply with the Beaufort County Council’s request to resign. If she does not resign, more aggressive actions need to be taken to have her forcibly removed from office.

    3. Concerned Beaufort County Taxpayers says:

After reading the articles and blogs in the local newspapers over the last few weeks, it has occurred to us, as concerned taxpayers that perhaps we need to step back, take a deep breath, and reflect on what is happening in our beloved community.

From what we can determine, it seems that an awful lot of people have jumped to conclusions about a situation that they really have no knowledge. This is an ongoing investigation and unless you have first-hand information on what has transpired in the Treasurer’s Office, we feel that accusing, trying, and convicting Joy Logan is a grave and cruel injustice.

Has anyone stopped to consider all the positive things she has done? She and her staff have assisted countless numbers of people save their property from tax sale and also aided “heirs” get their inherited property in their own name and they did it without a lot of legal red tape. They just followed the SC Law and worked extremely closely with Penn Center and others to help people save their homes and land.

She and her office were the first in the state to offer online payments for property taxes and all tax payments collected are processed in-house and that has eliminated “extra cost” for a third party processor.

Her payment collection rate over her 19 years of service has been exemplary and according to bidders that have attended the delinquent tax sale for years, she and her office run one of the best and most efficient tax sales they have ever attended. These are bidders that travel all over the nation and attend and participate in tax sales in many different states.

There are few people that have met and gotten to know Joy that have not felt she is a caring, kind, and considerate person. She genuinely loves Beaufort County and its people, and she has given 19 years of her life to its service.

There are none of us without flaws and we have all made mistakes. Does Ms. Logan wish she could go back and change some of her decisions? We are sure she does, as any of us would and probably have in the past. But don’t let a misguided decision cause the persecution of a fine and dedicated Beaufort County citizen.
