Beaufort County Council to Joy Logan: Resign! Joy Logan to Beaufort County Council: No!
Beaufort County Council to Joy Logan:
Joy Logan to Beaufort County Council:
Beaufort County Council on Monday evening, May 24, unanimously passed a resolution calling on Beaufort County Treasurer Joy Logan to resign. Next morning Logan issued a statement saying she has no intention of resigning but instead will forge ahead with her re-elections plans.
Stu Rodman, councilman from Hilton Head, offered the council resolution. Council’s passage of his motion follows the May 12 revelation that a former member of Logan’s staff, Casaundra White, embezzled more than $210,000 from the Treasurer’s Office. White had been rehired by Logan by playing on Logan’s sympathy even though White had stolen $600 from Logan’s office three years ago.
The call by county council for Logan to resign is symbolic only, since Logan is an elected public official not subject to employment by, nor answerable to, county council.
Upon hearing of council’s resolution this morning, Logan issued the following statement to The Beaufort Tribune:
“The culprits in this situation are Casaundra White, who played on my compassion and then embezzled $210,000 of the public’s money, and a new computer software system that was imposed on me by Gary Kubic, the county administrator, that fails to post tax payments to the general ledger. As a result, my office has been forced to handle tax payments manually, which we are doing correctly.
“I am the person who asked Mr. Kubic to straighten out the mess his system has caused. I am the one who set out to find why tax money was missing. I am the one who needs help, and yet I am the one who is being blamed.
“I was elected to do the job of Beaufort County Treasurer, and I am doing that job well. I hold a position of trust from the voters of this county, and I am doing everything I know how to do to continue to deserve that trust.
“I have served as County Treasurer for 20 years, and I intend to continue to serve. I am running for re-election as Beaufort County Treasurer, and I intend to win another four years in office.”
