May 2 – 8: Riverview celebrates National Charter School Week
This week, May 2 – 8, is National Charter School Week. In recognition, the first charter school in Beaufort county, Riverview, is planning special events.
Tomorrow, May 3, Riverview will be having its second service learning project of the year. Students will lead an assembly at 10:00 a.m. in The Commons, involving students sharing work they have done related to environmental stewardship.
After the assembly, Riverview students, their families and guests will go outside for a clean-up of the school’s campus as well as some small beautification projects. The gathering will conclude with a picnic lunch outside.
On Thursday students have been asked to come to school with a grocery bag of food staples to go to those people who do no have enough to eat. These bags will be collected and then delivered to the Salvation Army. This project will emphasize the core values of Riverview including empathy and stewardship. The activity will also encourage the students to show their gratitude to our community for supporting the Beaufort County School District’s first charter school.
The Riverview community is also celebrating Teacher Appreciation Week with a special lunch on Wednesday to honor their teachers.
Riverview was organized by a group of dedicated volunteers to offer, according to the organization’s web site, “a real choice in public education”. The school operates as part of the Beaufort County School District under a contract with the district. It receives funds from the district that are lower per student than the other schools in the district, the shortfall being made up by cash contributions and sweat equity from parents and other members of the community. Riverview has its own separate board of directors.
Riverview is located at 302 Burroughs Avenue, Beaufort. Its new director and the principal of the school is Wendy Randle. The school will expand its student body for each of the next three years to reach from the current fifth grade up to the eighth grade.
Here is the list of Riverview folks getting special thanks this week:

F-35Bs will be more than twice as loud
In the May 2010 draft EIS (Environmental Impact Statement) for the Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort, the key and crucial noise data for the F-35B was omitted in the 487 pages, substituting instead data assumptions based on the lighter, quieter Air Force F-35A: The Navy wanted the public to comment on the alternative proposals without this major environmental component.
