South Carolina Episcopal bishop to attend conservative global conference
Mark Lawrence, bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of South Carolina, is attending the Fourth Anglican Global South to South Encounter in Singapore, April 19-23, as an observer, according to a recent announcement.
The conference is a gathering of Anglican primates, bishops, clergy, senior lay leaders, associates and observers worldwide who are committed to holding fast to traditional Christian and Anglican doctrine in contrast to liberal trends in various Anglican groups including in the Episcopal Church in the United States.
Conservative leaders such as Lawrence are seeking ways to create alliances with like-minded traditional Anglican groups in other countries Over 130 participants from around the world are confirmed to attend conference.
According to the gathering’s web site: “We will explore how we may relate to one another in covenantal and communion autonomy with accountability in matters of faith and order; partnerships and networks in existing and new mission fields; and mutual capacity building for increased self-reliance for greater service.”
In other words, Bishop Lawrence has gone to Singapore to learn how to increase the distance of his diocese, headquartered in Charleston, from the national Episcopal headquarters in New York City by allying more closely with traditional Anglican groups in other countries.
