April 16-18: Zero Tolerance for Litter Weekend

The 2010 Zero Tolerance for Litter Campaign will be observed in Beaufort county and statewide on the weekend of April 16-18. The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office will be among the various county agencies participating in this event, which is aimed at enforcing the laws and educating the community about the negative effects of litter on our environment.

During the Zero Tolerance weekend, law enforcement officers throughout the state will be targeting littering, illegal dumping, and uncovered loads. The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office will be a participating agency, providing strict enforcement of all state and local litter laws.

Deputies will be focusing on uncovered loads in pickup trucks and other vehicles, which allow paper and other litter to blow onto roads and shoulders, in addition to any other observed littering violations.

Keep Beaufort County Beautiful and the Beaufort County Public Works department will also be providing support during the campaign weekend through the organization of volunteer groups for roadside litter collection at locations throughout the County.

The Sheriff’s Office “Cardboard Cops” can be seen throughout the community during this campaign. These symbols will be used as an educational tool and will provide a constant reminder to citizens to refrain from littering.

Zero Tolerance for Litter Weekend is a joint initiative uniting all law enforcement agencies in an effort to heighten awareness of South Carolina litter laws.

This campaign is a cooperative effort of Palmetto Pride, SC Litter Control Association, SC Department of Natural Resources, SC Department of Health and Environmental Control, SC Magistrates Association, SC Department of Transportation, SC Department of Public Safety, SC Department of Parks, Recreation, and Tourism, SC Forestry Commission, and Keep South Carolina Beautiful and Keep America Beautiful affiliates.
