    Suspect arrested in drive-by shooting

A Beaufort man was arrested Thursday, April 1, following a drive-by shooting occurring earlier in the afternoon at an Adams Way home.

Fifty-eight year old William Dennis Lawlor was arrested after being identified as the suspect who allegedly shot at his neighbor, 53-year old Vernon Norris Brown, as he drove past Brown’s home.

At approximately 4:00 p.m., Sheriff’s deputies responded to 2 Adams Way in reference to reports of shots fired in the area of Adams Way and Joe Frazier Road. Upon arrival, deputies met with Brown who said that he and his 24-year old son had been watering the plants in the front yard when Lawlor drove past his home, yelling at them out the window. Brown said that there have been previous altercations between he and Lawlor in the past. Lawlor continued on to his own home, however returned several minutes later, again driving past Brown’s home.

Lawlor allegedly stopped upon reaching the intersection of Joe Frazier Road, pointed a handgun out the window, and fired in Brown’s direction, then fled the area. No injuries were sustained by any party as a result of the gunshot.

As deputies conducted the initial investigation, Lawlor’s vehicle (a white Buick Riveria) was seen turning onto Adams Way. A traffic stop was conducted and upon identification, Lawlor was taken into custody.

Lawlor was transported to the Beaufort County Detention Center where he remains on one count of Assault with Intent to Kill.
