Couple fly private plane from Bermuda to Beaufort for Angèle Dubeau’s non-existent La Pietà concert

Couple fly private plane from Bermuda to Beaufort for Angèle Dubeau’s non-existent La Pietà concert

The couple pictured above flew their private airplane from the island of Bermuda to Beaufort this past weekend to attend an Angèle Dubeau La Pietà concert that was non-existent due to the January collapse of Beaufort Performing Arts, Inc. Nobody at the local defunct arts organization notified them or refunded the money they paid last fall for the tickets, the man said.

The couple contacted The Beaufort Tribune Monday afternoon to report the incident. “We flew our plane from Bermuda and arrived this past Friday at the door to the Beaufort Performing Arts Center on Carteret Street in our evening finery for the performance,” the man said, “but nobody was there.”

His companion and sweetheart said: “We heard Angèle when she performed at the Bermuda Festival last February 2009 and we wanted to hear more. I was all dressed in black evening attire for the Beaufort performance, but the building was locked and dark as my dress.”

    Angèle Dubeau and La Pietà

Angèle Dubeau, a renowned concert violinist, is a graduate and first prize winner of the Conservatoire de musique du Québec à Montréal. She is regarded as one of Canada’s most prominent classical performing artists. In 1997 she created the all-female string ensemble “La Pietà.” This unique ensemble has performed in numerous concert halls in Canada, the United States, China and Japan (but not in Beaufort), receiving rave reviews.

Beaufort Performing Arts, Inc., abruptly closed its doors January 25 after spending all of its remaining funds following the revelation by The Beaufort Tribune last June that the organization had suffered two embezzlements totalling $135,397. One of its remaining concerts, cancelled because of its financial collapse, was supposed to have been Angèle Dubeau’s La Pietà concert this past Friday, March 19.

Undeterred by their disappointment over the non-appearance of Angèle Dubeau and her La Pietà entourage, the couple repaired to the new Breakwater restaurant several blocks down Carteret Street, where they enjoyed a fine dinner Friday evening, they reported.

“We’ll definitely come back to Beaufort,” the man said. “Everyone we met was wonderful to us, even as they fell over themselves to apologize for the failure of the arts organization to let us know it was out of business or to refund our ticket money.”

“We liked Beaufort so much we might even think about leaving Bermuda to settle in Beaufort,” he said.
