Beaufort Memorial Hospital Foundation will present a special performance by the Duke Symphony Orchestra on Saturday, March 27 at 7:00 p.m. in the newly constructed Arts Center at Beaufort High School on Lady’s Island.

This will be the seventh year the renowned orchestra has traveled to Beaufort for this springtime event.

General admission tickets are $35. Patron tickets are available for $75 and include premium seating and the conductor’s reception, which will take place at the historic Tidalholm following the performance. This year Mrs. Hilda Holstein has graciously opened the doors of her home, which is a Beaufort icon, to welcome Patron ticket holders for beverages, heavy hors d’oeuvres and socializing with the orchestra and conductor, Harry Davidson.

Group rates are also available with general admission tickets priced at $250 for 10 tickets and the Patron Tickets at $500 for 10 tickets. For information or reservations, call the Foundation at (843) 522-5774 or visit www.bmhfoundationsc.org.

Sponsored by Kinghorn Insurance of Beaufort, Lowcountry Anesthesia, and Wachovia, the event will benefit Beaufort Memorial’s Keyserling Cancer Center and Healing Arts Program.

“This annual event means so much to all of us Beaufort Memorial,” said Foundation executive director Alice Moss. “Proceeds of the Duke Symphony concerts have helped improve the services and experiences of our patients and their families at the Keyserling Cancer Center. The concerts have become a wonderful extension of our cancer program’s medical affiliation with Duke.”

The Duke Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of conductor Harry Davidson, numbers more than 75 musicians drawn from the Duke undergraduate and graduate programs. The repertoire ranges from the seventeenth to the twentieth century and includes both well-known masterpieces and rarely heard works. The orchestra generally performs on the Duke campus four times a year.

For the fourth year, the Beaufort High School Voices will perform numbers accompanied by the Duke musicians. Under the direction of Victor Varner, Voices is a 70-voiced advanced choral ensemble that performs two annual concerts besides this weekend’s partnership with Duke Symphony Orchestra. Their upcoming Spring Show is April 13 and 14, also at The Arts Center at Beaufort High School.

“Duke Conductor Harry Davidson has been very gracious in working with our group, so we always look forward to this event,” says Varner. “It’s unusual to have the opportunity to combine a singing group like ours with the very special accompaniment of the symphony, but somehow we make it work.”

The Voices also have performed at the Heritage Choral Competition in Washington DC, at the First African Baptist Church on Daufuskie Island, and at The Savannah Arts Academy. “InnerVoices,” a smaller group formed to focus on vocal jazz techniques who recently participated in the New York Jazz Festival.

“It has been wonderful being a part of the relationship that has grown between the Duke Orchestra and BHS Voices,” said Moss. “It’s been a great opportunity for both the Beaufort High and the Duke students, with all of us in the community as the beneficiaries.”
