    April 10: CODA’s Carolina Spring Fling features pirate radio DJ Chuck “Boom Boom” Cannon

    The 2010 Carolina Spring Fling, sponsored by CODA (Citizens Opposed to Domestic Abuse), brings music by Savannah’s original pirate radio DJ, Chuck “Boom Boom” Cannon, to Beaufort for the Saturday, April 10 event, 6:30-9:30 p.m. at St. Peter’s Walsh Palmetto Room, 70 Lady’s Island Drive.

    According to Savannah Radio Online (http://www.savannahscoololdies.com/node/9):

    Cannon was born and raised in San Francisco. He grew up sports crazy, a fan of the Giants, the Warriors and the 49ers. Boom Boom played basketball in High School and loved to shoot, he once scored 39 points in a game. Glory Hog! Cannon’s love for radio started at the age of 10. His favorite DJ’s were Bobby Mitchell, Big Daddy Tom Donahue, The Real Don Steele and Dave Diamond. Chuck Cannon majored in telecommunications at The College of San Mateo and later graduated from the Ogden School of Radio Engineering in Huntington Beach.

    Cannon started rockin’ in Stockton at legendary Bill Drake station, KSTN in 1971. He went on to do evenings in 1974 at KBEQ in Kansas City. Cannon first came to Savannah in the Summer of 76 and worked at WSGA. The station was named Billboard Magazine’s Radio Station of The Year. Chuck worked with some great DJ’s including the voice of Savannah’s Cool Oldies, Denis Reidy. He left Savannah in 1985 and went on to work in London at All Europe Radio, Laser 558. It was a real pirate radio station, broadcasting from a ship 12 miles off the coast of England on the Thames River. In 1987, Boom Boom was part of the original lineup of DJ’s at Q-106 in San Diego: Jack Murphy, Terrence McKeever, Anita Rush, Jo Jo Kincaid, and Whitney Allen. The Station was Arbitron rated number 1 for 4 years in a row. Cannon worked with legendary personalities; Charlie Van Dyke and Steve Goddard at Oldies Sunny 97 in Phoenix. They beat super station, Kool in the 92/93 ratings. He then went on to work at his dream station, KFRC in San Francisco. It was the radio station he grew up listening to. Cannon’s San Francisco on-air resume includes KSOL, where Sly Stone also worked as a DJ. While at KSOL, Chuck was a panelist on the 80′s TV Show, “Radio Video Off The Top” Starring Gladys Knight.

    Other features of the evening will be heavy hors d’oeuvres catered by Debbi Covington and silent and live auctions. Come enjoy good food and dance the evening away while benefiting CODA’s programs.

    CODA provides safe shelter for victims of domestic violence and their children as well as legal assistance, adult counseling, children’s counseling and case management. All services are available to those residing in shelter and, on an outreach basis, to victims who no not require shelter. In keeping with its mission statement, CODA also has an active community education program.
