Riverview insiders: Attorney gen’l seeks racial “falsification” info
Riverview Charter School insiders have reported to The Beaufort Tribune that the S.C. attorney general is asking the state auditor’s office to look into the racial numbers issued by the Beaufort County School District and report any malfeasance.
Contact to the attorney general’s office comes after the Beaufort County school board used misstated school district racial data in an effort, according to Riverview leaders, to force Riverview to close its doors at the end of the school year. The racial data was a “falsification”, according to a letter sent late last week by Riverview leaders to all Riverview parents to gather support for an independent investigation of the school board and the school district.
Riverview is under the terms of an agreement imposed on it by the school board and the U.S. Office for Civil Rights to achieve a fixed racial quota of African-American students in the newly formed charter school. Riverview opened its doors last August with students chosen by lottery but will be forced by the school board to close at the end of its first school year if it does not admit sufficient black students to meet the quota for the upcoming year.
Riverview leaders have now discovered that the racial figures being used by the school board were a “falsification”, skewed approximately 5% to force Riverview into non-compliance with the racial quota, according to Riverview leaders.
