Free organ concert Friday
The spring series of free organ concerts at the historic Parish Church of St. Helena in downtown Beaufort opens Friday, February 26, with Julian Collings, organ, and Rebecca Hewes, cello, of London, England. The two are known as Svyati Duo.
Formed in 2008, Svyati Duo take their name from their first collaboration as cellist and conductor in a performance of Sir John Tavener’s masterpiece Svyati for choir and cello solo. Since then they have established a tremendous rapport as the only regular cello and organ duo in the UK, gaining an outstanding reputation for their innovative concerts. Tavener became their patron in 2009, and they now pursue a busy concert schedule, taking their seldom heard instrumental combination to venues across the United Kingdom, Europe and the United States of America. Their tireless search for repertoire has rewarded them with many unjustly neglected works, some of which they have now recorded on a disc for Regent Records.
For their St. Helena concert they will play works by composers spanning four centuries from the 1600s to the 1900s: Antonio Vivaldi, Georg Philipp Telemann, Johann Sebastian Bach, Joseph Rheinberger and Remo Giazotto. Rebecca Hewes will perform on the cello with Julian Collings accompanying on St. Helena’s prized and famous Taylor & Boody tracker organ, a replica of a Dutch instrument of the type Bach himself played in the 1700s.
The organ concerts at St. Helena have become known far and wide for attracting musical artists of the highest quality. They include four concerts each fall and four each spring. Svyati Duo are the first of the four in the spring 2010 series. The remaining concerts this spring will be held on March 5, March 19 and April 9.
