Riverview Charter School hires interim director
The Riverview Charter School board of directors has hired Dr. Eileen C. Williams, Ed.D., as interim director of the school while the board continues to search for a permanent director, according to an announcement following the board’s meeting Sunday evening. The move comes after the board fired the school’s first director, Eleanore Bednarsh, after only six months.
Dr. Williams is a retired superintendent from Massachusetts. She agreed to serve as interim director of Riverview beginning yesterday, January 25. The board voted unanimously to approve the move.
“Eileen is a dream come true for us, because she is exceptionally qualified and is willing to lead our school during this critical transition,” said Riverview board Chairman Alison Thomas. “It’s rare that you’re able to find someone with this level of professional experience right in your own community, willing to serve. We look forward to working with Eileen, and even more importantly, we look forward to permanently filling this position as soon as possible.”
According to the announcement, Dr. Williams has 35 years of experience as an educator, 32 of those years as an administrator including 20 years as superintendent of schools. She was the 2002 Superintendent of the Year for Massachusetts. During her tenure as superintendent, she was a member of the board of directors for the Massachusetts Association of School Superintendents for 10 years as well as president of that organization.
“I am thrilled to be able to join the Riverview Community as interim director,” Williams said. “Riverview is a unique and special school, and I know it will be very gratifying to be part of this educational community during this important time. I am pleased to be asked to contribute to what I know will be Riverview’s future legacy of educational excellence in Beaufort County.”
According to the announcement, the board expects to name a new permanent director by the end of the academic year.
In other news from the meeting, the board received an update on the school’s open enrollment status. Approximately 250 students have applied for next year’s open seats, indicating a high level of community interest and support of the school. About 34 percent of the applicants are minorities.
