Riverview Charter School receives 105 new applications in one week
After beginning the school’s open enrollment period just one short week ago, Riverview Charter School has already received 105 new applications for openings in the 2010-11 school year. Due to the overwhelming response, new Riverview students next year will once again be selected by lottery.
Riverview currently serves 250 students, grades K-5th. Next year, the school is expanding to sixth grade, and will have 57 new kindergarten students plus a few upper grade level openings due to natural attrition.
Of the 105 applications, 33 percent are from minority applicants, meaning Riverview will remain well-positioned to meet goals set forth by the Office of Civil Rights. Riverview will be deferring to OCR on how the lottery is conducted.
“It’s incredibly humbling and gratifying to see such continued interest in and support of Riverview,” said Alison Thomas, Chairman of the Riverview Charter School Board of Directors. “Seeing this number of applications so quickly is a real testament to our faculty and to the job they’re doing at Riverview. Most of all, we’re grateful for the continued support of all the families currently attending our school, and we’re looking forward to finishing this year strong and making the next year even more successful.”
Riverview is continuing to take applications through the end of January. Mary Heyward Harper, President of the school’s parent organization remarked, “Riverview has done an excellent job of creating a sense of community. As a parent of a fifth grader, I have enjoyed seeing my son develop new relationships – from his Kindergarten buddy, Jefferson, to his fellow classmates. We, as a family, have all appreciated the integrated teaching methods that are used on a daily basis as well as the opportunities for service learning throughout our very own community.”
Riverview’s mission is to create a small, diverse learning community that actively engages students in meaningful and innovative learning experiences. Emphasizing “learning by doing”, family and community involvement, and engaged citizenship, Riverview is committed to nurturing the whole child and preparing each student for a global society.
