BHS “Voices” performances rescheduled for today
Fear of extremely severe weather led to cancellation of Wednesday evening’s Beaufort High School “Voices” performance. That performance, and a second performance originally scheduled for today, will both take place today, the first one at 6:00 pm and second one at 8:00 pm. Like last year, the performances will be held at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, 70 Lady’s Island Drive, Beaufort.
At each performance the 90-member BHS Voices will perform two sets. The first will be classical Christmas selections featuring Franz Biebl’s Ava Maria. The second set will be two versions of White Christmas, both an acapella vocal jazz arrangement and a classic Drifters’ R&B version.
The BHS Troubadours will perform a selection of traditional English holiday carols.
Also performing will be the BHS InnerVoices. New this year, the InnerVoices is a smaller vocal jazz ensemble representing the more advanced Voices singers. The InnerVoices will be performing at the New York Jazz Festival at Lincoln Center in February.
Program for Winter Program 2009
Voices is a 90-member advanced choral ensemble under the direction of Victor Varner. The group has grown from 19 to 90 singers over the past six years. Using a highly disciplined “Solfege” technique, Varner’s students learn advanced sight-reading skills and perform songs of all genres with an emphasis on both classical works and vocal jazz.
Vic Varner, the director of the Voices and the InnerVoices, is in his sixth year as director of choral music at Beaufort High School. He obtained his masters degree is music education from Winthrop University, where he sang in the Winthrop Chorale and was assistant director of the Winthrop University Jazz Voices. He remained in Rock Hill for 15 years as choral music director at Northwestern High School. One of his ensembles there achieved the highest score in the North American Music Festival’s Jazz Division.
The Winter Concert will begin at 6:00 pm and again at 8:00 pm. Tickets are $7 and can be purchased at the door or by calling 322-2173.
