Delinquent tax money missing from county treasurer’s office
Money collected by Beaufort County at the October delinquent property tax sale has gone missing from the treasurer’s office, Joy Logan, county treasurer, announced this week. She said the sheriff’s office is investigating. She declined to state the amount of funds in question or what happened to the money because of confidentiality due to the invesigation.
This is the second time in recent months that money has disappeared from county accounts. In July the clerk of court, Elizabeth Smith, was indicted and resigned after being accused of embezzling $33,283.52 from the court’s accounts, allegedly to pay for life insurance policies on members of her family and the costs of improvements to her family’s house at Pawleys Island SC.
