Letter to editor: Sentence jailhouse residents to work

Reader: Sentence jailhouse residents to work

    Dear Editor,

The people who are constantly arrested and jailed, as I see it, are using the local jail like some of us working people use the mountains or shore as a short get-away. They are housed and fed good meals and kept safe from the outside world for a few days.

This is a perfect example of fraud, waste and abuse of taxpayers funds. I have a hard time working and paying taxes knowing that I am paying for someone else’s get-aways.

We need to sentence these people to work. There is a need for more people to keep our highways clean, and they could clean cemeteries and abandoned properties as well. It must be assumed that these are non-violent criminals, so they should need very little supervision. It should be less expensive to transport them to an area to work than keep them locked up for rest and relaxation.

Do the majority of these people have jobs or is this their job? Somehow we need to make spending time in jail so unattractive that we don’t have as many people who want to come back.

I know I am not alone in the way I feel about this subject.
