92-year-old Rufus Chapman joins heritage group
Beaufort’s Gen. Richard H. Anderson Camp #47 of the Sons of Confederate Veterans and the Stephen Elliott Chapter #1349 of the Daughters’ of the Confederacy recently held a fall gathering at Cotton Hall Plantation in Yemassee. During the gathering Commander Claude McElveen installed Rufus Chapman, the 92-year-old father of Quartermaster Bill Chapman, making him the senior member of the Camp.
Owners Joe and Allyson Harden hosted 102 members and prospective members and spouses of these two groups to an old fashioned cookout at the Harden’s syrup shed near an old rice field. The highlight of the gathering of these good friends was the firing of one of Joe’s 12 pound Napoleon cannons, such as those used by Confederate forces during their fight for Southern Independence.
