Beaufort county youth speak out against drugs, violence & gangs

The group Citizens Against Violence Everywhere (CAVE) invites local teenagers to attend a Youth Speak-Out Saturday at noon at Technical College of the Lowcountry (TCL), Ribaut Road, Beaufort. The gathering will take place in TCL’s auditorium.

The Speak Out is designed to focus on the problem of drugs, violence and gangs through an interactive, multi-faceted community discussion involving a panel, music, slam poetry and other venues. Organizers hope an energetic and engaging format will encourage young people between the ages of 13 to 21 to share their thoughts and feelings about these serious problems.

CAVE was founded last year by Beaufort County Councilman Herbert Glaze in response to a wave of violent crime throughout the county. He was joined in his effort by local clergy and law enforcement, The Boys & Girls Club and other groups.

Organizers say more than 300 young people and adults have been invited to the Speak Out through school and church announcements and text and email networks. There is no admission charge and the event is open to the public.
