Friday is Beaufort Garden Club Day
When the thirteen original founders of The Beaufort Garden Club gathered to form the first garden club in Beaufort on October 23, 1934, little did they know that 75 years to the day later the Beaufort city council would declare October 23, 2009, as Beaufort Garden Club Day.
Mayor Billy Keyserling presented the proclamation on behalf of the garden club to the City Council on Tuesday of last week. The “ayes” had it in a unanimous vote.
Cheers and applause of club members were heard in the council chamber as Mayor Keyserling presented the proclamation to Janie Culley, club president. On behalf of The Beaufort Garden Club, she accepted the tribute honoring 75 years of civic service to the City of Beaufort and its people.
The following proclamation reveals but a few of the many projects and civic enterprises that this small garden club has rendered to our city these many years. Behind every club endeavor are the goals of beautifying Beaufort, elevating civic pride and fostering community spirit in our beautiful, historic coastal town.
