Focus on Beaufort County’s public schools: Riverview Charter School
Riverview Charter School is up and running
Riverview Charter School, the first and only charter school in our county’s public-school system, opened its doors to children from kindergarten to 5th grade for the first time this past August 17. Pictured above is the kindergarten class, slated to graduate from high school in 2022.
Riverview was organized by a group a dedicated volunteers to offer, according to the organization’s web site, “a real choice in public education”. The school operates as part of the Beaufort County School District under a contract with the district. It receives funds from the district that are lower per student than the other schools in the district, the shortfall being made up by cash contributions and sweat equity from parents and other members of the community. Riverview has its own separate board of directors, which will be elected in December 2009.
Riverview Charter School mission statement
To create a small, diverse learning community that actively engages students in meaningful and innovative learning experiences. Emphasizing “learning by doing”, family and community involvement, and engaged citizenship, Riverview is committed to nurturing the whole child and preparing each student for a global society.
Riverview is located at 302 Burroughs Avenue, Beaufort. Its founding director and the principal of the school is Eleanore Bednarsh. The school will expand its student body for each of the next three years to reach from the current fifth grade up to the eighth grade.
