Beaufort city council holds special meeting, votes to increase property taxes 14.83%
City council votes to hike property taxes 14.83%
Beaufort city council members met in special session yesterday for the sole purpose of considering on first reading an ordinance to set the tax levy for the city’s fiscal year 2010 operating budget, according to the notice for the meeting. Instead, the council members were presented with a resolution involving a millage increase for the capital budget. Council voted unanimously to increase the millage for the capital budget, resulting in a combined millage for the two budgets of 60.62 mils, which will result in a property tax increase of 14.83%.
Earlier in the year Mayor Billy Keyserling announced to the public that decisions made by previous city councils, before the beginning of his term of office, resulted in massive city debt to finance construction of the city’s new municipal center on Boundary Street. The millage rates set by council yesterday reflect the burden of that debt on city taxpayers.
Council will meet next Tuesday for the second and final reading and vote on the tax increase.
