Sea Island Rotary Club of Beaufort plans charity shrimp race

rotaryshrimpracelogoEver seen a shrimp swim for charity? Sea Island Rotary Club of Beaufort is planning just that in conjunction with the Beaufort Shrimp Festival on Saturday, October 3, and you can be part of the fun.

Five thousand rubber floating shrimp will be dropped into Beaufort River adjacent to the Waterfront Park. Each shrimp will have a unique number 0001 through 5,000. The shrimp will float with the tide toward a trap at the finish line. The first 10 shrimp to cross the line will receive a cash prize ranging from $100 for 10th place up to $2,000 for 1st place.

Here’s where it gets interesting. You can “adopt” a shrimp and thereby take the prize from the shrimp if your shrimp wins the race. You get assigned a number at random corresponding to a shrimp’s number on the day of the race. You can donate the money any time before then.

In addition, the top 10 finishing shrimp have a chance to win a $100,000 cash prize if the shrimp number correctly matches a randomly selected number by Odds On Promotion, a third party insurance company, prior to the start of the race.

It’s all for the good cause of raising funds for Rotary programs to promote Polio Plus (Rotary International’s effort with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to eradicate polio in the world), local charities supporting children, and an international water project.

The race will begin at 10:30 a.m., October 3, near the Woods Memorial Bridge adjacent to the Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park.
