Wilson McInstosh, owner of two local bookstores–Beaufort Bookstore and McIntosh Book Shoppe–announced today that his stores have in stock for sale an item highly sought for the upcoming “Great Santini Weekend” in Beaufort–autographed copies of Beaufort native Pat Conroy’s great autobiographical novel, The Great Santini.
The weekend comes during the month when Conroy’s latest novel, South of Broad, has been released for sale. Conroy is currently traveling all over the region to book signings and is expected at Beaufort Bookstore in October to sign his new novel during the time of the reunions of the Beaufort High School classes of his era–the late 1950s and early 1960s.

The announcement coincides with a free showing sponsored by Historic Beaufort Foundation of the The Great Santini movie in Beaufort’s downtown waterfront park Thursday evening at dusk. The movie stars actors Robert Duvall, Blythe Danner and Michael O’Keefe. The book stars the author himself, Pat Conroy, whose original signature is included in the books on sale at the two bookstores.
“We have almost 100 signed copies of Pat’s book The Great Santini for sale,” said Wilson McIntosh, owner of the stores. “We’re selling them at our regular price while they last.”
McIntosh was a freshman at The Citadel in Charleston when Pat Conroy was a senior there. He remembers Pat’s college basketball career at The Citadel with admiration and says that “Pat was a whole lot better basketball player than he makes out he was.”
McIntosh Book Shoppe, phone 843-525-1066, is located at 919 Bay Street in the downtown historic business district, just across the street from the waterfont park where the movie is being shown. It specializes in rare and out of print books, particularly ones about Beaufort and the South Carolina lowcountry.
Beaufort Bookstore, phone 843-524-1119, is located in Ribaut Square shopping center at 2127 Boundary Street, about a mile north of downtown. It offers current titles, a book club, and a 15% discount on The New York Times top 10 hardback bestsellers, both fiction and non-fiction.
