Beaufort’s representative in U.S. Congress, Joe Wilson, holds Town Hall Meeting in Beaufort today

Congressman Joe Wilson comes to town today

headerU.S. Representative Joe Wilson (Republican), whose gerrymandered Second Congressional District meanders in a strangely configured swath from north of Columbia in the center of the state to Beaufort on the coast, will appear at a Town Hall Meeting in Beaufort today. Wilson resides in Lexington SC, about 120 miles from Beaufort.

Originally scheduled for a small venue, the meeting location was moved to the Beaufort High School gymnasium because of the large crowd expected to attend. The meeting will begin at 10:00 a.m., to be followed at 2:30 p.m. by a similar meeting on Hilton Head at the Hilton Head Island High School.

Wilson distinguished himself from many of his fellow “fiscal conservatives” in the U.S. House of Representatives this past September by voting in favor of the bailouts of Wall Street investment banks. That issue and later bailouts of commercial banks and automobile companies have raised the ire of  tens of millions of voters concerned that the federal government has exceeded the sane bounds of deficit spending, thus saddling future generations with an unsustainable burden of national debt.

The bailouts and the more recent health-care debate will no doubt be high on the list of items Wilson’s constituents will want to discuss with him at the Town Hall Meetings today. Similar town hall meetings are being held throughout the country this month by U.S. congressmen and senators, who are on recess from serving as the representatives of the voters when they are not otherwise engaged in negotiating with corporate lobbyists and raising money for re-election.

Wilson, age 62, was elected to Congress in 2001 after serving in the South Carolina State Senate for 17 years. His congressional seat is up for re-election or replacement in November 2010.
