Beaufort County sheriff’s office offers Citizen’s Police Academy

Learn what it takes to be a deputy sheriff

cpa_button1The Beaufort County sheriff’s office is inviting all citizens who live or work in Beaufort county and are at least 18 years old to attend its Citizen’s Police Academy (CPA), which runs for 10 weeks starting in September.

Since 2002 the sheriff’s office has hosted 23 sessions of the CPA for more than 1,000 residents. The course is an opportunity to learn about the sheriff’s office and how better to protect yourself.

Classes will run from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. in Beaufort on Tuesdays and in Hilton Head on Thursdays. The starting date in Beaufort is September 8 and in Hilton Head is September 10.

Class participants will learn about almost all aspects of the sheriff’s office and will have face time with the decision and policy makers there. The sheriff’s office will provide each participant with an in-depth manual and refreshments.

Some of the topics covered by CPA instructors will be law enforcement, criminal investigations, civil process, warrants, juvenile services, training, homeland security, drug enforcement, traffic enforcement, special teams, gangs, budget process and more.

The CPA will also provide various “hands-on” demonstrations to enhance participation in the program. Don a pair of latex gloves and immerse yourself in the world of crime scene processing with a “CSI” scenario. Suit up and learn the physical and legal dangers of firing a duty weapon using the “shoot/don’t shoot” exercises in the “walk in our shoes” scenarios. Find out why if you drink and drive the sheriff’s office will provide the chaser in the “DUI fatal vision” scenarios.

All of these exercises, although entertaining, are designed to give the public a snapshot of what law enforcement around the country is faced with every day.

Also included in the program will be a “citizen ride-a-long,” a field trip to the emergency management center, and a field trip to the range facility that showcases some of the office’s specialized equipment and the S.W.A.T. and K-9 teams. The sessions will conclude with an interactive chat session with Sheriff PJ Tanner.

Applications for the Citizen’s Police Academy are available at the sheriff’s office or on its website; www.bcso.net. To have an application mailed to you, please contact Captain T.W. Smith at 843-470-3292.
