Man reported shot by two masked men in his home

A man was shot at his Billy Hill Road residence off Shanklin Road Friday night in a struggle with two masked intruders, according to a report yesterday from the Beaufort County sheriff’s office.

Just after midnight on Saturday morning, deputies responded to a reported gunshot victim in the area of the Builder’s First Source lumber yard on Parris Island Gateway. Upon arrival, deputies met with the victim and his cousin, who were en route to Beaufort Memorial Hospital, the report said. The victim had a gunshot wound that they said he had sustained at his home.

The victim said he arrived at his Billy Hill Road residence just before midnight to discover two unknown, masked intruders inside his home. The suspects allegedly demanded money from the victim, at which time a struggle ensued between the victim and his attackers, he said. During the struggle, the victim sustained a single gunshot wound, he reported. The suspects allegedly stole an undisclosed amount of cash from the victim before fleeing the area in an unknown direction.

The victim then called his cousin to take him to the hospital, he said. Due to the victim’s condition, they decided to pull over to notify law enforcement and EMS. The victim was transported by ambulance to Beaufort Memorial Hospital for treatment. His condition remains undisclosed at this time.

No further description is available of the suspects. The identity of the victim remains undisclosed as the investigation progresses.

Billy Hill Road is a small unpaved road off Shanklin Road in the Laurel Bay/Burton area. It is comprised of five residential properties, which are a combination of private homes and mobile home rentals.

Over the past several weeks there appears to have been an increase in reported crimes, especially those involving firearms, in this area, which runs from the vicinity of the entrance to Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort across the Burton Wells area to the Cross Creek Plaza shopping center, which houses Wal-Mart and Best Buy.

On October 31 shortly after midnight Beaufort police officers were called to Bojangles restaurant, 109 Robert Smalls Parkway, in response to a reported freshly committed armed robbery. Witnesses told the officers that two masked subjects armed with handguns accosted an employee who was emptying trash and forced him into the back door of the business.

Two days prior, October 29, on Shanklin Road, a man speeding in a vehicle stopped at the Laurel Village Mobile Home Park and critically shot a 49-year old male victim who was defending his wife that the suspect was allegedly beating. The suspect, Devon Jamel Ward, 25 years old, is still wanted by the Beaufort County sheriff’s office.

Only the day before, Wednesday, October 28, deputies were called to a home on nearby Roseida Road Extension for the report of an armed robbery in a private mobile home by two armed suspects who allegedly forced their way into the home occupied by a couple with a child.

On October 21 two men were arrested on various drug and weapons charges including crack cocaine distribution at a residence in a large mobile home park on Roseida Road near the entrance to Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort.

Two prior armed robberies occurred nearby on Eagle Ridge Road on October 18 and and Joe Frazier Road on October 19 under similar circumstances, where a couple with a child at a mobile home were allegedly robbed by armed suspects.

The sheriff’s office is asking anyone with any information to contact Investigator Cpl B. Chapman at 843-470-3469 or the Beaufort County dispatch center at 843-524-2777.
